If you die without a will, the Washington State government has a distribution plan for your assets. The government's plan is called "Intestate Succession." Any legally competent person of legal age who does not like the government plan needs a will.
So who will not like the government plan? Just about everyone. If you wish to distribute your assets to a trust, you will not like the plan. If you wish that some of your assets go to a friend, you will not like the plan. Likewise, a single person with a surviving parent who wishes that some of his or her assets go to brothers and sisters will not like the plan. Any married partner or registered domestic partner with a taxable estate will not like the plan, unless they like to pay extra taxes.
If you are unsure whether you like the government plan, call The Song Law Professional Corporation at (206) 440-7400, or drop an email at esong@thesonglaw.com. Ed Song is an experienced Wills, Trust & Estate Planning attorney, and will be happy to counsel on your need of a will.
